Guards, interlocks and protective devices

Examination of the technical condition and purpose of devices restricting access to equipment danger zones.

When it is needed

For an incident involving a machine tool, conveyor or other equipment, and disputes over the presence and operation of intended protection.

What we examine

  • Guards, casings, screens and emergency stop elements.
  • Interlocks, sensors and accessible safety circuit elements.
  • Diagrams, maintenance logs and information about interventions in equipment.

Materials to prepare

  • Technical passport and manufacturer's manual for the specific variant.
  • Electrical, kinematic and other diagrams relevant to the question.
  • Maintenance, repair and configuration change documents.
  • Inspection materials and information about the object's condition before and after the event.

Sample questions

  • Which protective devices does the manufacturer specify for the danger zone examined?
  • Does the configuration actually recorded match the technical diagrams provided?
  • Which indicators of malfunction, removal or alteration of protection are available for examination?
  • How should the intended protection limit exposure to the hazardous factor considered?
  • Are the available data sufficient for a finding on the device's condition at the time of the event?

How the work is carried out

  1. We will agree access to the object and safe examination arrangements.
  2. We will compare the condition of protective elements with technical documentation and preserved materials.
  3. We will describe the features found and check their significance for the specific question.

Result

A technical report on the composition, condition and limitations of examining protective devices.

What affects the conclusions

Work on operating equipment is permitted only with safe access ensured. The examination does not authorise operation and is not an industrial safety expert examination.

Frequently asked questions

Must the equipment be operated?

Not always. Functional checking depends on preservation, safe access and the questions posed. Dangerous modes are not recreated for demonstration.

What if the interlock was replaced?

Removed elements, repair records, diagrams of the previous configuration and initial inspection materials will be needed. A finding on the past condition may remain limited.

Let’s discuss your task

Describe the situation and the materials you have. We will agree the questions, scope of work and format of the result.
